New York: Here are some facts about Republicans: a) The 1964 Civil Rights Act signed by a Democratic President was voted for by more Republicans than Democrats. At that time Southern Democrats were 'Jim Crowe' Democrats. This act provided for more relaxed immigration policy and gave people of color greater opportunity to immigrate o the United States. b) Both Immigration Amnesties were signed by Republican Presidents - Ronald Reagan and George Bush. The harsh 1996 Immigration law which is gradually being reversed was signed by Bill Clinton. c) Free Trade is a Republican agenda. This policy will be beneficial to the Caribbean. Trade Unions support the democrats. d) The first serious Black candidate with a viable chance of winning the Presidency was a Republican. Colin Powell was courted by the Republicans but declined to run. Incidentally he is the only man to refuse consideration for the Vice Presidency by both the Democrats and the Republicans. e) Mayor Guliani's war on crime has resulted in a safer street for all New Yorkers! He has stopped Black flight as well as White flight from New York City. Yes, there have been casualties along the way but remember the crime wave before his adm inistration.f) On education, this system has no accountability. The New York City budget is the largest education budget in the entire world, it's budget is larger than the budget of some of developed nations. Prior to Guliani no one knew exactly how many workers were employed by the Board of Education. Indo Caribbeans & Democrats Here is a problem the Indo Caribbean community has with the Democrats. They have never endorsed any Indo-Caribbean candidate vying for public office. As a matter of fact, they have never even invited any Indo-Caribbean candidate to the screening process! Yet recently our candidates have been more qualified than the party's choice. This article is intended to inform and help you make a more informed decision when choosing your party. Now you can register as a Democrat so that you can vote in the Democratic primary and still have the freedom to vote Democrat or Republican in the general elections. Politically conscious communities are following this practice. This is very noticeable in city wide election. Elected Officials Although there are 4 times as much registered Democrats as Republicans, in a city wide general election party designation means very little. In Queens census figures for year 2000 (Indo Caribbeans are included in the Asian group) 26%----------------------Latinos----------------No elected official 18%----------------------Asian------------------No elected official 18.3%--------------------African American ---10 elected officials The 10 African American elected official include 5 Assembly Persons, 4 City council persons and 1 Congressman. These districts are drawn to elect African Americans. Nno other ethnic group has a chance. Republican Party Republican District leader from Queens, Joseph Casper believes that the Asian community will be the future backbone of their party. He further contends that the other minority parties are not seriously reaching out to the Asian community and the Republican party in Queens will accept all without reservation. A community can be empowered without having persons of their own heritage being elected. In order for this to happen one needs access to elected official. These Democrats currently in office give the Asian community little or no access. The result is inadequate services for our people. IMPORTANT: It has been brought to my attention that an infamous community activist is registering undocumented aliens and resident aliens for voting. I want to remind these people that it is a FELONY to do so and it may affect your chances of becoming citizens. If you did make such an error in signing the voter registration form do not compound it by going out and vote. |
