Caravan Poems (Haikus)
By Edmund L. Bridgewater

COLLATERAL
In the space
Of a few minutes,
A generation of ideas,
Descend from nowhere;
Resolve fanfare;
Dissolve collateral.

UNTOLD
Quietly set aside plans,
Waiver restlessly,
As demands for action
Unfolds;
Regurgitate conclusions;
Untold.

CLASSICAL
A change of emphasis,
A switch in interest,
A focus reinstated;
Slowly watch; listen;
To a past refrain
Classical.

CARE
Feel inclined to pick up
Where I left off, yesterday;
Intentions clear;
Through a dark void I stare,
Flickering lights, in there,
Signaling care.

IN MAY
Spring disappearing,
Rain falling;
May begins on a wet note;
Life ebbs away;
Warm weather impinge;
Summer resonates in May.

AT NIPPORI
New boarders,
Mostly women,
Chatty,native;
At eye level,
A lady stands
On the platform,
Musing,
In her kimono.

TO NARITA
Sit, wait,
For a journey to begin;
Mind clear,
Stare at anything,
From within
Compartment five,
Twelve A;
On my way to Narita.

A NICE DAY
A curtain drawn,
Polarize sunshine
Streaming through
A window next to me;
The train ride so far,
Spectacular !
Focus upwards,
A sky with white clouds,
Indicating - a nice day.

FADES
Speeding up,
The train rocks;
Anxiety, temporary;
Inquiry, encroaching,
Fades warily.

THE PASSENGER
A traveler,
Heading towards the lavatory,
Responds to normal urgency.

BUSINESS CLASS
In Ana's lounge
Seated comfortably,
Sipping Japanese tea,
Disinclined to project ahead;
Can eat for free
Great cuisine;
Reserve space instead
For a Business Class meal.

FROM MACAU
On water from Macau
To Tsimshatsui;
On my left -
A vast expanse;
A tug boat -
Static ;
Going in a vertical direction;
A cargo ship changes course
Races to Kowloon.

BOMBAY DREAMS
Bombay dreams
Are real
On Cameroon Road
In Kowloon;
Ideal atmosphere:
Music, food;
Pro - active, tranquil.

VIJAY
A tailor on Nathan Road,
In Kowloon,
He is into art;
Tempo of Hong Kong
Defined.

A TAXI RIDE
Short journey,
Talk to a lady on mobile;
Descriptions given,
In english;
The driver bellows
In Cantonese;
Reclining in the back seat,
Bathing in warm sunshine -
A solo passenger.

A NIGERIAN
Seated in proximity,
During the ferry crossing -
A Nigerian,
Telling personal tales -
Asian;
Taped for reference;
Later, at Immigration,
Severed ties,
Confusion.

A QUICK REFLECT
In the Royal Pacific Hotel lobby,
Waiting to be transported by airport bus;
A quick recall of yesterday;
Cricket, clothes;
Kowloon - a magnet
For a quick reflect.

TO TOKYO
On the way back,
Feeling like an astronaut;
Scattered cloud formations
Arrest my eye;
A window seat,
Augments,
A pleasant ride.

DOWNHILL
Downhill,
Destination  home;
Weather  beaten,
The care taker hurries,
Descends,
Comfortably alone.

DENTAL
Sit, wait;
Time to kill
Overshadowed by
A Spring sky, cloudy;
Dental commitment
Augurs pain,
Feigning bravery;
Sit , wait;
In a tormented state.

BLUE NOTE
Chilly intervention,
Mars early Spring,
Cherry blossoms, visual;
Lent, as usual, forebodes;
March ending on a blue note.

DREAMS
Dreams,
Maraud my sphere,
Planting doubts,
Unclear;
Wide awake, confronting
A glorious evening,
Outside;
Focus
back in contention.
With pride.

SATURDAYS
Bright sun opens
My day
A Saturday like
Earlier years;
Now, no fear of being
Taken for a ride
On a motorbike by
A racing Dad,
Heading for abattoirs:
Animals; me sad;
Pigs grunt, sheep
Meek, subdued;
Lent construed .

A BUS RIDE
A bus ride to Ueno
From Bunkyo
Along Kasuga Doori:
On my right
Chuo University;
Descent, ascent,
Smooth ride,
Mind wander;
Free will, moods, desires,
Entrepreneurial.

SHOPPING
Aisles partially blocked,
Shelves empty
Being stacked;
Shoppers few,
Minimize inconvenience.

CABLE TV
Watch,
Learn more,
Intoxicated;
Withdraw
From saturation
Next door.

FACES
Etched on my memory,
Faces, elderly;
Remain young,
In atmospheres,
Indifferent, craving
For future to come.

NO TRACE
The day
Wet, and rainy,
Leaves no trace
Of resentment.

CITY LIGHTS
Lie on my back;
With an upward gaze:
Note, city lights,
Filter in,
Intermittently expose,
A white ceiling;
Sounds from traffic below
Correlates a movie;
Suspending lethargy.

CHICHI
I sit and watch
The lake's ripples below.
My upward gaze
You stroll by,
Spit your saliva underneath,
On the flat surface, circular;
If the sun wasn't out,
I'd be inclined to shout !
My father was a sanitary inspector !

YEATS
I glanced out of the window
Of my loaned studio flat,
Then I re focus my vision
On the bit of paper in front of me;
My pencil, sharpened;
I jot down a few lines;
Simultaneously,
I imagine I am Yeats.

BEAUTY
Beauty,
Sometimes, in the eye
Of the beholder,
Does not escape the blind

UNSCATHED
At dawn, a full moon,
Disappearing behind
Ellis Island;
Unscathed,
The Staten Island ferry
Journeys on.

ELIGIBLE
A man stands, he looks down,
Watch hands caress a piano;
Expresses astonishment;
Is unaware, the player,
Who describes what he does,
Is in the wings,
Waiting for Miss Right
To come along, and sing.

TEEN ROMANCE
The serenity
Of an early morning respite,
Was shattered by roller skating,
Teenage conversation,
And stealth.

SCARED
Scared of missing,
Experiencing,
A cold winter day;
Scared of past, present,
Slipping away;
Future like winter,
Sometimes,
Has to merge.

A YACHT
A yacht races,
Alone,
Going up river;
On its way down,
A ferry;
Near by, two men:
Father, son,
Mutual photography.

FUYU / WINTER
Winter is here at last,
Early, dark, nights,
Publicizing electricity;
Vie for praise
From moonlight fans;
And succeed temporarily.

ORIGIN
A favorite route, taken,
Often, offers views
Of contrast :
Depicts a world,
Desperate to discover
Origin, the art of living
Free from sin.

MIRACLE
Didn't know where to go,
When life stood still;
Hope, instilled;
Bravely, I abandoned sin.

SUMMER / NATSU
Summer eclipses
A golden week,
Exclusive;
Disallowing added goals,
Celebrations;
Feeling cheated,
Suspense lingers,
Warily abstract.

STILL
A long walk to seek,
Find somewhere
Ideal to eat;
Light, summer attire;
Conspicuous; yet,
Hidden underneath,
Is a human frame
Pulsating with mixed feelings;
Between Myogadani
And Ikebukuro,
A grasp of will,
Waits,until mind becomes,
Thoughtlessly still.

ECHOING
See planes in the sky,
See stars and wonder why ?
See tomorrow eclipse today,
See a world drifting away;
See life as it should be;
Steadily, reality sets in;
A recurring theme  echoing !

INTERIM
Legacies of mist clouds vision,
Beset by stormy horizons;
Out of reach for now;
Interim

INDIA
On the 3rd Floor,
Content with
Restaurant offerings,
And a partial view;
Absorbing time;
New arrangements mull,
In a mind, reminiscing India.

PAST ONE
Past one
|The day moves on,
And even warm sun
Agrees,
That winter,
For all its faults,
Fulfils a need
To precede Spring.

EXCESS
What if I told you
About my life ?
The ups, and downs,
The sometimes
Too frequent frowns;
Would you understand,
A man,
Swimming in too deep an ocean
Of excess imagination ?

MAKE BELIEF
A tribute to the late Mrs. Heard
Trains go by,
In front of a vision,
Masked by yesterday's
Grim news;
Shoppers, scant,
For a Saturday,
Have time;
Humidity, battles,
A slight breeze;
A constant hum
Of emptiness neutralized;
Shinjuku's aura deviates
Into an audible calm
Of make belief.

DEFINITIONS
Definitions given,
Display
Inner devices :
The good, abhorrent;
Ambition  driven.

PIVOTING
Get carried away,
Time on my side;
Can't wait for
Close deadlines,
To traffic a life
Pivoting;
A casual stroll,
Late evening, unburdens.

QUIETLY
In, ou
An exercise program
Of sorts, fulfills;
Can't afford
To lose track of aim;
The game is the same,
Here, and elsewhere;
Walk, run, body, mind,
In unison;
Heart breathes a sigh,
Quietly.

OUTBURSTS
A struggle within,
Emerges;
A storm of emotions
Blow away,
Something precious,
Dear, tranquil;
A sense of caution
Abides;
A truce, hovers,
Over heads,
Enmeshed in a mire
Of outbursts.

THE MEMORY OF
Old movies
Recall younger days,
When energy  surplus,
Presumed;
No fuss to be made,
At present;
Old movies watched again,
Unexpectedly, overturns,
That theory;
Eyes weary, castigate,
The memory of.

NOSTALGIA
A fountain with large
Area space, masked
By trees : green,
Offers a luring feel,
A sense of
What could have been;
A picturesque scene,
A daytime reveal
Of nostalgia.

BROAD DAYLIGHT
Opposite :
Parco, Toyo Kitchen,
Matsuzakaya;
Impressions too familiar,
The kind that steals view
From the homeless, on benches,
Sleeping in broad daylight.

OSAKA / Minami  Kita
Bars,
Night spots,
Nocturnal fantasies;
Imagination
Barely stretched
Until,
Memory oppose will.

HIGASHI PARK
Winding roads
That lead to
Mountains, a zoo;
Kids having fun,
Anonymity on the run,
Assimilating confusion.

FUKIYA
To soon
To recall;
Fukiya !
Delicately kept
A secret,
From nostalgia.

ROPPONGI
Slower,
Pace reduced to rural;
Cookies,
Bought at Mrs. Fields,
Satisfy an appetite
Yearning for ? ? ? 5

PATHS
Paths,
Leading everywhere
Vary;
Scary interludes
On either side,
Threaten enclosure,
Retreat,
Avoid exposure.

FERTILE
Start the week, outside;
Sowing seeds in areas fertile;
Growth, edit, file.

DRIVEN
An open apology given;
Pretense, smugly driven
Complements.

MOO ICHIDO
Start the day
The usual way,
End it drained;
Lacking the urge to begin
All over again.

ON PAPER
So near, yet far away,
The summing up of the day;
Mid  way through its tenure
Far reaching consequences
On paper.

ALL CLEAR
A hum caresses ear,
Meditation in the air,
Troubling signs dissipate,
Lessen fear;
A notion echoes
All clear !

LESSONS
Some pain, anguish, gratitude;
Near misses; scrutinized;
Relishing lessons learnt.

RHYME
Words quantify thoughts,
Mesmerized;
Deeply engaged,
In rhyme.

HUMAN
Watch life disappear,
Retreat somewhere,
Where mystery confines;
Visible shapes fade;
Re-appear human.

DREAMS
Past midnight,
Dreams, while still,
Awake, subside.

SAME PEOPLE
On the verge of heights,
Attainable;
Speeds imaginable;
Arriving scenarios, new -
Same people.

WALL STREET|
Sheltering,
In a market atmosphere,
Alien to me;
Tailor made
For prosperity.

JOY
The tabla spoke,
Using hands,
Nimble;
It said :
Miles, Ornette, Roy ! ! !

SOMETIMES
Sometimes doubts creep in,
A door, locked on the inside,
Opens wide;
Confidence enters,
Doubts hide,
Until winter.

FOR BEING
Vision offers alternative;
Sight, a feeling;
Perception
An idea of being.

RANDOM
Shuffling envelopes
Like a pack of cards,
Deciding on who,
To write to, next;
Too cold to use
The hat on my head;
Settle for random, instead.

LOVE
Staring at absence
Doesn't make sense
Until love is seen
In a dream sequence

ON HOLD
Future,
Slow down,
Take stock;
Present, still trailing
Too far behind,
Unworried about a past
Trying to unwind.

A BIRD
Water, still; a bird, tired of
Wet environment, perches, sings.

TANGIBLE
In motion
an element of truth,
tangible;
an expanse of what is,
surpasses expectations.

By taxi to Toshima  ku
The ride, at first, easy;
Then a wish of never again;
Intruding - an attitude change;
Brooding, the taxi continues
Cruising; appearing lost,
The young driver maintains focus
On the street map he is given
Bilingually written; suddenly, up a side street,
Eyes meet with a display of books,
In a tray, outside a house  one story;
The fare, a receipt; an entry;
Heading in the direction of a front door,
On the ground floor; a voice urges from within,
" Caravan is next door !"

Digital
At street  level,
Everything accessible,
In images
Slotted in;
Details compact,
Measure up;
New dimensions
Of feeling, in faces
Unforeseen.
Weather
Whether or not
There is change,
Forecasts are made;
Summer is due,
Spring prepares, quietly,
Rehearses, " Adieu !"

Repetition
Week drawing
To a close;
End of May, pose,
Memorial Day;
Tradition,
Repetition.

Thoughts
Scattered in fields
Of uncertainty : thoughts  grim;
Seeds sown,
With calamity
Ploughed in.

Utopia
Waiting for someone
To make my day;
Waiting for upheaval
To explain away,
Mistrust of convenience;
Waiting for it all
To fall into place;
Waiting for the inevitable,
To take me away;
Utopia beckons !

Mail
Read in haste;
Meditated on;
The response,
When it comes,
Speedily processed;
Sent.

Hope
The inner me says wait and see
If hope can;
On the outside,
Looking in
Pessimism.

Passive
Silently,
A life form,
Goes about
Its daily norm,
Like a walking statue;
Others, similarly  passive.

Between you
Areas of discussion,
Disagreement, war;
Between you,
Love can thrive;
Between you,
The two of us ?

Sentimental
Tender, soft  hearted, warm;
A calm before a storm;
Cynical , yet un-imposing;
Modest, realistic;
In love, sentimental.

Certain
Busily taking
Photos  certain;
Agreeable neighbors
Blend in;
Pity batteries,
Wrongly arranged,
Thwart an effort
To compliment WINN.

The Day
Blustery,
Excess winds;
Humidity- minimum;
Typhoon hints
In the sky above,
Clouds restless;
The eagle flies.

Words
Words in my ear
Delivered with care,
Properly spoken;
Audio format
A craving substitute,
For perusal;
Images  imaginative,
Subscribe.

Love
Fast and furious,
In and out;
Love equates with -
You and me;
Catastrophe ?

Humid
Today escapes scrutiny;
At a snail pace,
From A to B;
Observations made
With an eye substitute;
In environment
Humid.

Two Women
Sharing the lift
With two women
Neighbors;
Residing on lower floors;
Brief greetings predicate
Mood.

At Midnight
Overt, the sky
Outside, dark,
Reveals Monday;
Glimpses of June,
Cavorting with the Full Moon.

A Promise
Full of trust,
A promise made,
Hurriedly,
Is set aside
For clarity;
Mind over matter
Executes.

Tears
Overflowing inside,
Tears like rain,
In hurricane season,
Wash away everything;
Dispel the pain
From the past;
Supplant with grievances
Contrast.

Nevis. St. Kitts
Birthplace of Alexander Hamilton,
St. Kitts  a sister;
Two women,
Fighting over
Seeds of Independence;
Sown in soil of hope,
Diminished by rhetoric;
Fear polarize minds,
Closely knitted,
By history.

Always
In my heart,
Soul,
Mind,
Discontent,
Rage,
Malevolent etches
Corrode surfaces
Exterior;
Divine intervention sways;
Always.
