New York-, Sept. 12, 2008: New York-based Guyanese designer Roger Gary launched his Spring/ Summer 2009 Collection at New York fashion week, FashionHow International De-signers Show, which opened on Monday last at Devin Tavern, Tribeca New York. According to a press release, Gary opened the show ase with c a collection that took the audience
on "an imaginary visit to a tropical forest at midnight".
His pieces included metallic brocade tops, ivory silk-satin pants,
graphic floral prints, textured fabrics and colourful animal
prints. He accessorized his pieces with feathered plumage, mahogany
bracelets and necklaces and oversized floral headpieces, all
of which he also designed.
The event will feature former Project Runway contestant and film producer Zulema Griffin alongside Guyanese born, international designer Roger Gary and Bianca Golden, a former contestant on America's Next Top Model. Other designers will come from St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Trinidad, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana and Nigeria. The week of activities will include a unique upscale fashion show, fashion expo, press conference and chic after-parties for the fashion savvy Virgin Islanders. The main goal of VIFW is not to provide new and experienced designers with a platform where they can showcase their unique talents and creativity while further enhancing the Caribbean's fashion tourism market but to showcase and highlight the talent of our local Virgin Islanders. Over 40 local models, stylists, photographers and make-up artists will have the opportunity to network and be a part of the Virgin Islands fashion movement. Virgin Islands Fashion Week is being sponsored by Premiere Wines and Spirits, Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, Presidente Beer, Fiji Water, Élan Image Consulting of Maryland, Stoosh Images of NYC, Centennial Wireless-US Virgin Islands, Tutu Park Mall, and more. The girl who was declared 'The Body' after copping the cover of Arena magazine, is enjoying a stellar year. Her Toni & Guy campaign is on billboards all over Britain and she has had numerous high-flying editorials for fashion's premier glossies. Not one to be shy about voluptuous assets as well as her high-fashion versatility, Nell has worked for some of the best in the business, including Victoria's Secret ,GQ ,Vogue ,Rimmel and a host of other fashion industry top brands.
The fashion show with Kardashian sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney of MTV's Keeping Up with the Kardashians fame was held in support of the Facial Paralysis Foundation and Russell Simmons Stop The Violence/Face the Music Foundation. Pieces from the Collection were also displayed and gifted to A-list stars including Natalie Cole, Ashley Simpson, Penny Marshall and Pink. The show featured top international designers and collections and the Liz Mannette Collection was the only Caribbean accessories collection showcased. Fashion Designs-Inshan Dookhran and Steve Harry-have announced
that the prestigious Ms Global International Pageant, held on
August 10 at the Holiday Inn, Bloomsberry, Coral Street in Wembley,
London, was won by Ms T&T Global 2008 Knicie Mills. The show was hosted by Grenstars Promotions, under the aegis of pageant director Yvette Philbert. Knicie bettered 23 rivals to cop the top prize, and also brought home the award for Best National Costume, designed by House of Jacqui, and Best Evening Gown prize, with a creation designed and made by Jordis Fashion Designs. Knicie participated in several competitions and won her way to the fourth annual Ms Global International Competition. The last Ms Global International Pageant was won by Ms Zimbabwe, Cynthia Muvirimi, which was held in Jamaica. Pageant Ambassador Latchu Ramchandani is the co-founder and brainchild behind this international contest. The next Ms Global International Pageant would be held in the Bahamas 2009.

It is expected that the Caribbean designers would be signed on to labels and be provided with marketing, distribution and manufacturing opportunities.

The night continued with JS Dirty Industry, a contemporary collection of urban/rock inspired menswear, womenswear, swimwear, edgy graphic tees, and track jackets/ Visual artists Gracie Xavier and purse designer Khali Keyi paired up to present a line of bold designs on clothes along with a series of hand made leather pouches and purses. Wearable art at it's best! Aside from beautiful wears, the night was made complete with the pairing of designers with performers. Designers had their works presented to performances by violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain(DBR), Mozayik Percussionist, Markus Schwartz, Kreyol Hip Hop Artist Seca Konsa, Spoken Word Artists El Pierrette and Francesca Andre. Francesca Andre of Nocia LLC also provided the coordinating services for the evening, and the night ended with grooves from the band DOLA. The purpose of the evening was to raise money to assist the Gaskov Clerge Foundation in their better health initiatives for Haiti. Through their philanthropic efforts, Gaskov Clerge Foundation gathers a group of doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals every year and organizes a mission to Les Cayes Haiti, where they set up a mobile clinic and provide patients and area residents with much needed healthcare services, including life saving surgeries as well as other healthcare treatments to help improve the quality of life of the people of Les Cayes.
Moments after, Ms Walter who won from a field of nine contestants told the Department of Information that she was excided about here first win outside of Dominica. "I was very, very thrilled. I knew I had worked hard for this pageant and I am just reaping the fruits of what I had sown. I am very grateful to God especially for guiding me throughout this pageant because I knew without him I not have made it. I am very pleased, very happy that I have made my country proud," she said. Ms Walter said her
win was an indication that Dominica had much talent and that
the girls who had been selected to participate in regional pageants
did their best and represented the island well. The contest brought together participants from the United States Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Antigua, St Vincent, Montserrat, St Kitts, Anguilla and host country Nevis and Ms Walter said she was very pleased with the idea of integration. "I love the idea of integration and I am very pleased that the Caribbean was finding alternate ways of integrating not only through Caricom and the CSME but through pageantry. "I want to commend the committee for the Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant. I know they are very young but it shows that our youth are developing themselves and the interest in young people. I want to tell them to continue with the good work," she said. Meantime, Minister of Culture in the Nevis Island Administration Hensley Daniel encouraged the participants to find time to savour the cuisine and pristine beauty of Nevis and also to be mindful that the pageant could help them to broaden their horizons and develop a more informed perspective of the Caribbean. He also commended the show's Chief Executive Officer Randy Jeffers and his team for having had the confidence to translate [plans] through into action. The contest was first staged in 2006 when Nevisian born Jamilla Parris was crowned the first Miss Caribbean Culture Queen and Leandra Lander of Dominica captured the crown in 2007.

Dame Vivienne Westwood is one of fashion's most influential figures, credited as a pioneer of the punk movement. In the 1980s Women's Wear Daily hailed her as one of the six most influential designers of all time. She has been awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II). Strong, exotic features Hinds was discovered by Saint International's CEO Deiwight Peters during CVM's Faces of Summer Model Search in 2001. Hinds' strong, exotic features appealed to the panel of international judges who voted him into the Top 5 males of the competition. "It is obvious who the Caribbean's most successful male-model-of the-moment is Tafari Hinds," says Peters, Saint boss. "He has been committed to his vision of international success and this achievement is yet another sterling display of Saint International's sophisticated brand of models on the world fashion stage." Shortly after he was signed to Saint International and then did a photo shoot with influential photographer Marlena Bielinska. He was styled by official Saint stylist Tyron Mayes, who has worked with Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Oprah Winfrey and Iman. The portfolio from this shoot earned Hinds a contract with Bookings Model Management in London a few months later. Int'l modelling However, he did not begin his international modelling career until 2003. Juergen Teller is one of contemporary fashion's most influential photographers. He has been shooting the Marc Jacob's campaign since 2005 and his editorial credits include glossy magazines such as all the Vogues, W, Dazed and Confused, and major campaigns include Commes De Garcon, Helmut Lang, Yves St Laurent, Calvin Klein, and Louis Vuitton, Hinds recently shot an editorial for Dazed and Confused and made a second appearance in GQ STYLE styled by fashion powerhouse Tom Ford (formerly of Gucci fame).
Hot on the heels of her eight-page British Vogue spread, shot in London, Sunna was immersed in her Marie Claire shoot, which took her through the rich history of African tribesmen, on Safari and into the majesty of Mount Kilimanjaro. This type of
whirlwind success is not new to the international supermodel,
who is signed to Premier models in London. Having booked big
name jobs before, such as Nordstrom and an Alexander McQueen
campaign, Sunna is accustomed to the transcontinental trek for
major modelling duties. Thrilled An effusive Gottshalk was thrilled about her first trip to Africa and she described the experience in the Motherland as being "magnificent and absolutely breathtaking". "It was a tremendous experience and I was thoroughly happy and truly grateful to be a part of it," she said. She worked with photographer Wayne Maser and praises him as being fun with lots of energy and very passionate about his work. The Marie Claire assignment has been her largest and most challenging editorial gig to date. The shoot was physically demanding as Sunna had to do a lot of running in order to secure the right shot. The photos show Gottshalk in African garb as she runs through a village with numerous Massai tribesmen. "I like to test my ability. It was hard, but I enjoyed it because I got to see the extent to how far I was able to go in order to get the job done right," she said. Gottshalk has worked worldwide on numerous high-fashion and beauty campaigns for Alexander McQueen, Iman Cosmetics, Orbit, L'Oreal and Avon. Sunna's Marie Claire spread is an outstanding addition to her growing, yet already extensive résumé. And that she got the chance to travel to the land of her ancestry made the experience even more special.

The shoot, themed around one of the world's favoured sports, cricket, also has a retro-60's glam undertone and was shot on location in London. The eight-page spread fea- tured Sosheba on at least four pages. Toronto, Canada, July 18 2008: People originating from different countries
of the Caribbean, gathered in large numbers at the Rembrandt
Banquet Hall in Scarborough, Ontario Canada on July 5th. The
occasion? The second annual staging of the Miss Queen of the
Islands Canada pageant where 17 young ladies were in contention
for the top prize. By the time it got to the results, a young assertive 24-year-old with a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies evolved as the overwhelming winner. Jenneillia Julius, the daughter of two Trinidadian parents, was as astonishing as she was astounding. As fluent in French as she is with the English language, Julius clobbered the opposition in the "Best In Evening Gown" segment parading confidently, in a breath-taking green and bronze coloured Bobby Ackbarali creation. The university graduate also copped the "Miss Ambassador" title, which is presented to the delegate who best represents the principles and interests of the event's organisers. However, it was her sweeping triumph in the talent category that left scores of dropped jaws in the audience. Trinidadian patrons who are in the 40-plus age bracket, (along with a percentage of nationals of similar age from other neighbouring Caribbean countries) gazed in pleasant awe at Julius' performance. The effortless ease and composure with which she delivered, were the attributes of a professional stage practitioner. It was as if she was born with the ability to excel on stage. Needless to say Jenneillia convincingly won that segment of the pageant as well. Eventually she was adjudged a unanimous overall winner, beating Jamie Ellis representing St. Lucia into second place. Trician-Renèe Edwards representing the birthplaces of both her parents Montserrat and Grenada, was third. The winner who happens to be the daughter of well known Trinidad entertainer Chris "Tambu" Herbert, performed a gospel selection entitled "Upon This Rock" penned by her dad. Though her father was not present, she made it seem so. Her stage presence and performance brought flashes of her father who attended the Berkelee School of Music in Boston in the early '90s. She outshone the competitors by leaps and bounds in the talent category. She harbours aspirations of teaching French to elementary school children and establishing her own after school learning centre, somewhere in the not-too-distant future. Well known Toronto-born basketballer Jamaal Magloire is the president and CEO of the pageant. Born to Trinidadian parents, Magloire, an indefatigable crusader in the fight against crime, donated the night's gate proceeds to the UMOVE organisation. UMOVE (United Mothers Opposing Violence Everywhere www.umove.com), a not-for-profit organisation addressing the crime plague in Canada, received $5,000 from Magloire whose brother Justin was shot and killed in Toronto about a decade ago. No one was ever arrested or charged for that crime. The 2008 edition of the pageant presented the delegates in categories of Best In Beach Wear, Talent, Intelligence and Best In Evening Gown.

beauty last night wowed judges of the Miss Universe '08 pageant
to make it to the top three finalists.Miss Dominican Republic Marianne Cruz, 23, was the second runner-up in a pageant that was dominated by Latinas. The 2008 crown was won by Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza. Mendoza was named the winner of the 57th annual 2008 pageant, held in Diamond Bay Resort in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 13. The other finalists were Miss Colombia, Tailana Vargas, Miss Mexico Elisa Najera, and Miss Russia Vera Krasova. No other Caribbean contestant made the top ranks. Meanwhile, for the second consecutive year, Miss USA fell down during the evening gown competition. The women were judged by an international panel that includes Donald Trump Jr., Nadine Velasquez, Roberto Cavalli, Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins, Joseph Cinque, Bollywood star Eesha Koppikhar, Louis Licari, Taryn Rose, and Nguyen Cong Khe. Eighty contestants participated in the pageant. Japan native, Riyo Mori, Miss Universe 2007, crowned her successor at the conclusion of the telecast. During her reign, she traveled the world as an advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research, and legislation. The newly crowned Miss Universe will go on to do the same.

Sigail has been enjoying an enviable international fashion profile. Since June, she has been appearing alongside supermodel Kate Moss in the Agent Provocateur lingerie campaign. She was also featured in the Independent Newspaper's Style Feature. She has shot with Boy George for Spanish Vogue. Legendary photographer Nick Knight also booked her for the Samsonite campaign. Other high profile for Sigail include Alberto Ferretti, Yves St Laurent runway show, Freddie campaign, a main model in a 10-page spread in Italian Vogue among others.
